Save the Earth-- One Bite at a Time
Press release: February 1998

EarthSave launches national campaign

Millions of people care about the environment. Few of them, however, have made the connection that the foods we choose to eat impact the environment. The campaign is designed to leverage people’s natural environmental concerns and get them to take notice of the food choice issue. If our national office, our local chapter, and our members successfully use our campaign materials we could bring this important information to millions this spring.

Campaign goals

  • Raise awareness about the environmental impact of food choices.
  • Promote movement toward a diet centered around fruits, vegetables, grains and legumes — food choices that are healthy for people and the planet.
  • Raise awareness of the name EarthSave.
  • Strengthen our voice by building membership to EarthSave.

Campaign Materials

  • Handout
  • Poster
  • Public Service Advertisement
  • Local Chapter “Tool-Kit” for campaign action
  • “Mini Tool-Kit” for action by any concerned citizen

National initiatives

Materials for the campaign were created by headquarters staff in conjunction with volunteers around the country. Besides providing support for chapter initiatives, EarthSave will be sending out campaign materials to major environmental groups, youth groups, media outlets and more. One example of this outreach was the launch of campaign materials to manufacturers and retailers at the Natural Products Expo in California last month.

Chapter initiatives

Local chapters were provided with a forty-page “tool-kit” with instructions and templates for doing campaign outreach, marketing, publicity, fundraising, networking and more. Examples of how chapters might conduct the campaign include publishing Opinion Letters, placing the public service ad in local newsletters and publications, distributing materials at outreach booths, working with local retailers to provide the handout as a “bag stuffer” and placing posters around the community to raise awareness of EarthSave.

What you can do

1. Use the handout. Make copies of the original and give them to friends, co-workers, and more.

2. Get the word out. If you’re not quite ready to start a chapter in your city but would like to join a network of people promoting the campaign, call us to order the mini “how-to” kit.

3. Enroll Members. There is power in numbers – and EarthSave speaks with a louder voice when we have more members. Use the special campaign incentive to invite people you know to join now!

4. Launch a local EarthSave chapter. Refer them to the website area about starting a chapter.

5. Become a member. If you’re not already an EarthSave supporter, join today.
